A Place Where Quilting and Scrapbooking Come Together

So Many Cricut Blades

With so many Cricut blades, it is hard to know which one to use. Join me for a full tutorial explaining which blade to use and when to use it.

Okay, You Need Cricut Blades,
But Which One ?

I am sure that you already know that Cutting Blades that we use with our Die Cutting Machines are Brand Specific. The Cricut Blades only fit Cricut die Cutting Machines. The other Die Cutting Machines have their own Cutting Blades and Blade Housings that are specific to that brand. Today, I am going to discuss the Cricut Blades. I will discuss the other brands on another day. Some of this information will apply to other Die Cutting Machines

With so many Cricut Blades, it seem a bit of overwhelming. And to make matters worse, the housing units for the Cricut Blades are different from one machine to the next. In other words, the Cricut  Blade setup for my Cricut Maker is different from my Cricut Joy.

Then to make it more confusing, Cutting Blades are brand specific. In other words,

In addition to being brand specific, Cutting Blades are also machine specific. The Cutting Blades for the Cricut Maker do not fit the Cricut Explorer or the Cricut Joy.

Buying Replacement Cricut Blades

Can you buy Cricut Blades without the housing? The answer is yes, you can. In some instances  you can the blades in 1 count, 2 count packaging. I have even seen some blades in packages of 10.

I prefer to buy the Cricut Blades in bulk. This way I don’t run out in the middle of a project and it is much cheaper.

But you really have to pay attention to the sales and the clearance items to get the best deals. There are a couple of sites that I use and they send phone alerts.

Would I ever buy additional Cricut Blades
with the Housing?

That answer is Absolutely YES.

Because I have so many projects with so many different types of materials, having those extra blade housing saves me a lot of time.

Here is an example, I like to do puzzles and the blade depth for my puzzle blanks is different from the blade depth on vinyl or cardstock. I have a dept cut blade just for puzzles. I have another deep cut blade for cutting chipboard. This is a time saver for me. That is why I do, it isn’t necessary and this isn’t something that you have to do.

Let's Take A Closer Look at Some Cricut Blades !

Let's start by looking at the Premium Fine-Point Blade.

This Cricut Blade is going to cut you thin to medium weight materials. It can cut materials like cardstock, textured cardstock, paper, poster board, vinyl, and iron-on transfer paper. It can also cut light weight fabrics.

I like this blade for cutting intricate designs. It does an excellent job.

This blade can be used with the following machines – Maker, Explore, Explore One, Explore Air, and Explore Air 2. This blade cannot be used with the Cricut Joy has it’s own set of Cricut blades.

Now let's take a look at the Knife Blade.

This Housing and Blade looks a little different from the Housings and Blades that we have looked at so far. That is because it is very different and has a very distinctive appearance. It isn’t something that you would easily confuse with the other blades.

The Knife Blade is a specialy Cricut Blade that can only be used with the Cricut Maker. This Housing Type does not fit any of the other Cricut Machines – Explore, Explore One, Explore Air, Explore Air 2, and Cricut Joy.

This Cricut Blade is going to cut your thicker and denser materials. It cuts things like Balsa Wood 3/32″, Basswood 1/16″, Mat Board 2 ply or 4 ply, Foam 3mm, Chipboard 2mm, and even Garment Leather up to 5 oz, or Tooling Leather up to 7 oz.

This Cricut Blade cuts a lot of materials. Just please note, that it is not recommended for cutting images or details smaller than ¾”. These smaller designs do not cut well with this Cricut blade.

I have had great success using this blade to make small ornaments out of chipboard. The family and grandchildren have loved these ornaments.

The Knife Blade is what I use when I want to cut out my puzzles. Puzzles is something that I love to make. This Cricut  Blade does not have any issues with the small curved edges like the ones you find on puzzle pieces.  It does an amazing job.

I also like to make Dioramas and this Cricut Blade is perfect for all of those projects. I get really nice crisp details on all my 3D projects using this blade.

This is one of those Cricut Blades that I use a lot. I use the Knife Blade for puzzles and chipboard and so much more.

What About Generic Blades?

There are a lot of generic blades out there. But you need to be careful because using generic blades and housing will void your warranty.

I have researched this topic expensively and I found that it has to do with the physical weight of the housing and the up and down motion of the carriage when the machine is operating. The generic blade housing are sometime heavier and put additional stress on the machine.

Warranty expired or not, I will not be using generic blades or generic housings. I will always use the Cricut Blades for all of my Cricut machines.

Ok, so what did you think?
